Choosing the Right Flooring for Your Custom Home: A Room-by-Room Guide
All home selections can be difficult. From lighting, paint colors, cabinets and more. The most important decision you can make in your custom home: the flooring. Not only is this super important for the look and feel of the room, but is also essencial for functionality and longevity. You don’t want to spend money on building your dream home, only for the flooring to not hold up with the test of time.
Selecting the right flooring for each room in your custom home is essential for both style and function. Here's a room-by-room breakdown to help (and of course, that’s what we are here for):
KITCHEN
For kitchens, durability and easy maintenance are key. There is a lot of moisture that can be in this area, from dishwashers, sinks, spills and a ton of traffic.
Tile and vinyl are popular options due to their resistance to moisture and spills. Choose a style that complements your cabinetry and countertops for a cohesive look. They don’t have to match, they just have to blend!
LIVING ROOM
In this central space, comfort and aesthetics matter. You don’t have to worry as much about moisture in this space (although spills do happen everywhere.
Hardwood is a classic choice, offering warmth and elegance, while engineered wood provides a similar look with better resistance to moisture and temperature changes. You can also add a carpet on top, to give some warmth to the space.
*Note, often with open floor plans, you will have the same floor throughout the living room and kitchen – so both of these places will be top of mind when choosing the right floor to flow throughout.
BEDROOM
Comfort is a top priority in bedrooms, making carpet a popular choice for its softness underfoot and noise-reducing qualities. There are so many new styles and types of carpets available to meet your needs, and the functionality of the space.
Alternatively, hardwood or laminate can create a more polished look, especially when paired with stylish area rugs.
BATHROOM
OH the bathroom. We can’t even tell you the number of times we have seen wrong flooring installed in this space. Water resistance is essential here, so go for materials like ceramic tile, porcelain tile, or luxury vinyl.
These materials handle moisture well and come in a variety of styles, from sleek and modern to rustic and traditional. Tile is one of our favourite choices, especially because there are so many fun patterns and styles to choose from!
ENTRIES AND HALLWAYS
How many times do you come and go each day, coming in with your shoes all muddy and scraping the floor – a lot. These high-traffic areas need durable, easy-to-clean flooring.
Tile or hardwood are excellent choices for their ability to withstand wear and tear while maintaining a polished appearance. Try a fun tile! It’s a small space, and this is the perfect spot to play with a little fun aesthetic tile!
When choosing flooring, consider factors like durability, maintenance, style, and the function of each room.
The right flooring will enhance your home’s beauty while standing up to everyday wear and tear. Take the time to explore your options and invest in materials that will last for years to come. Confused? That’s where we come in. We can help walk you through step by step and help you choose the RIGHT materials that will withstand the test of time.
