How to Decide on the RIGHT Renovation Company

So, you are ready to take on a home renovation – YAY!

That’s step one, but the second step is the most important. This step dictates how successful your whole renovation is going to go, how much it will cost, how timely it will be and if it adds value to your life and home. The second step is picking the RIGHT people for the job.

So, how do you know if you’re hiring the RIGHT renovation company for your home? We outlined three ways you can be sure about your decision and make your transformation as successful as possible.

1.     DO YOUR RESEARCH

First and foremost, do your research! See what companies are available and investigate what they do. If you are doing a full home renovation, you don’t just want a contractor that is limited in their qualifications. You need someone who will take charge and be able to see the big picture from start to finish.

A good way to narrow down your search, is to ask your family and friends who have been through this process to give you some suggestions. If you don’t have this network – you can ask a third party with unbiased opinions like the Calgary home builder associations or Calgary home supply stores to give you some recommendations.

Once you have your list prepared, it’s time to move on to credentials!

1.     PAST WORK + CLIENTS

The best predictor of the type of work you are going to get – is to look at past work, and past experiences. Check out each company’s website and look at the projects they have completed. Are they similar to your style? Do they look well executed? Do they look detailed, well thought out and to your standards?

Then check out past client’s recommendations - either in their testimonials section, or on Google Reviews. What have people said about working with them in the past? Since a home renovation is something very personal, it is so important to see how others view the company.

Once you have an idea on what they do – it’s time to TALK to them!

1.     DO AN INTERVIEW

Lastly, conduct an interview with your top picks – either on the phone or in person (or both). At the end of the day, you are going to be working very closely with the renovator of your choice, you should be able to have a good connection with the company and people you hire.

Try and get a good sense of the people you are talking to. Are they transparent? Do they understand what you want from your renovation? Do you trust them to do the job?

This is one of the BIGGEST investments you make in a lifetime – especially if you are doing a whole home renovation or building a custom home. It is costly, and time consuming – but is SO worth the experience when you find the right people to do it!
