Fireplaces: Designing the perfect Fireplace for your home.

A fireplace can be the focal part of your home. There are so many factors when choosing how to style your fireplace within your home and home renovation. Plus, besides the design factor, it can also be the place you huddle around with your family, the spot to come together and enjoy.

So, what factors do you have to keep in mind when designing the perfect fireplace for your home and family? We have outlined five things to keep in mind when deciding on your fireplace design:

1.    What is your style?

First and foremost, define your style. You don’t want to have your fireplace differ completely from the rest of your space. It should seamlessly blend into your home style. Weather that is modern, rustic, classic or otherwise – establish your style first before deciding on the rest.

2.   To Mantle or not Mantle?

A huge decision is to add a mantle or not to mantle. Mantles are great for creating a spot to display some beautiful artwork, statues or little important pieces for your home design. But, on the other hand, you might want to keep your fireplace more seamless. Not having a mantle can create that beautifully clean look, and have the fireplace itself as the main focal point.

3.    How high do you want it?

The height of the room is also a factor in this decision, but you might want to keep your fireplace small, or extend it all the way to the ceiling. Bringing the fireplace upwards can create the feeling of a bigger space, and draw your eyes to the height of the room. If you re working with stone or slate, this can extend all the way up, or you can change it up with different elements, like wooden slats that extend the rest of the way up the wall.

4.    Keep or Trash?

If you have an existing fireplace in your home, you might want to decide if you want to start fresh, or keep some of the elements. Some older homes have gorgeous brick on display, that you might want to keep and “revamp”. On the other hand, you might be going for a different look and trash it all together.

5.    Add some Storage?

Another thing to consider is adding some cabinetry around the fireplace.  This is an amazing way to frame out the fireplace, while adding some extra storage and display shelving.
